University of Hertfordshire's Royal Society Wolfson BioComputation Research Lab is located in the Science and Technology Research Institute (STRI), one of three major research Institutes at the University. Here experts from areas as wide ranging as Theoretical Quantum Physics, Algorithms, Space Sciences, Aeronautics, Computer Architecture, MicroElectronics, BioComputation, and Complex Adaptive and Evolutionary Systems, interact informally on a daily basis, as well as in more formal seminars and numerous ongoing research collaborations. The Institute is based principally within 2500 m2 of dedicated research office and laboratory accommodation adjacent to the University's Innovation Centre on the Hatfield College Lane Campus. The STRI is the primary focus for the research activities of the Faculty of Engineering and Information Sciences and houses more than 180 research staff and research students from the three major academic Schools of that Faculty. The STRI engages in a wide range of basic, strategic, and applied research projects within the disciplines of science and engineering. The current value of grants and contracts based in the Institute is more than 12 million pounds sterling, with approximately one quarter coming from the UK Research Councils (EPSRC, PPARC, and NERC), one half from the EU, and the remaining quarter from industry and national Government. The BioComputation Laboratory belongs to Computer Science which in the 2008 Research Assessment Exercise was rated first amongst all post-1992 established UK universities, with 55% percent of its research assessed as in world-leading and internationally excellent categories. The BioComputation lab has strong links to groups at the Systems Biology Institute in Seattle, University of California (Berkeley), EMBL-EBI (Cambridge), MRC-NIMR, the MRC Biostatics Unit, Max-Planck-Institut, and other UK and European Systems Biology groups.
UH will coordinate the project, will lead WP2-Category Theory Framework, WP3-Mathematical Model of Interaction
Computing, and WP6-Dissemination and Collaboration and will contribute to WP1-Algebraic Structure of Continuous and Discrete Models of Cellular Pathways, WP4-Environment Specification Language and WP5-Proof-of-Concept Prototype of Interaction Computing Environment.
