M.SC. Thesis supervision

Jones, G, EEG Microstates in Mediators. Supervisors: Elena Antonova (Institute of Psychiatry, King's College London), Judith Nottage (Institute of Psychiatry, King's College London), Chrystopher L. Nehaniv (The Wolfson / Royal Society Biocomputation Research Laboratory, University of Hertfordhsire). This thesis uses automata-theoretic methods including epsilon-machines and causal-state automata reconstruction to derive significant results in neuroscience  (In addition C. L. Nehaniv has done holonomy decomposition on the automata.) BIOMICS supported Prof Nehaniv’s participation in the research supervision meetings.

This paper can be found on ArXiv at http://arxiv.org/abs/1303.0091  [CORE] Abstract: Motivated by computational issues in algebraic automata theory here we define the cascade product of permutation groups as an external product, as a generic extension. It is the most general hierarchical product since it uses arbitrary total functions to combine a linearly ordered set of permutation groups. In other words, cascade products are explicitly constructed substructures of the iterated wreath product. We show how direct, semidirect and wreath products can be described as cascade products and we also discuss examples of composite groups that can only be constructed exactly as generic extensions by cascade products.
